Experience     Oil In Ice and Cold Weather Response

Spill response in ice and cold temperatures requires unique solutions. Health and safety are of particular importance due to extreme conditions.

Over the last 10 years, Counterspil has been at the forefront of cold weather response research.

CRI has researched and developed recovery devices for removing oil in broken ice with the Norwegian research group SINTEF 1995 - 2007. The MORICE (Mechanical Oil Recovery in Ice-infested Waters) program included tank tests in Norway and Germany as well as field testing of a prototype device in Prudhoe Bay, Alaska  Work on countermeasures for oil-in-ice has continued through the 2007-2009 Joint Industry Program.  Assessments of Best Available Technology in broken ice were also conducted for BP Exploration (Alaska) Inc. in 2001 and 2006.

CRI also conducted a state-of-the-art review of skimmers for recovering oil in ice for the Canadian Petroleum Products Institute, tested the Foxtail Skimmer in Kenai, Alaska, wrote response strategy guides for winter conditions in the North Caspian Sea and Sakhalin Island, and conducted cold weather response training in Alaska. Past work has also involved studies of response hardware for northern locations, including the Canadian and US sectors of the Beaufort Sea, Northwest Territories, and Baffin Island.  Cold weather response work continued in 2007 with NTCL.
